Framing It Out: My Directory Structure
As the book began to take shape, I developed a directory structure which I'll outline here, since for the life of me, I could not find any information on how authors structure their word processing files while they're working on a book. First, I created a subdirectory for each primary section:
Then I created a subdirectory for each chapter in these sections. For instance, this is the "02.corporations" subdirectory:
I always put a two-digit number before each subdirectory name, to make it easier to "Sort by Name" -- without the numbers, your computer will sort alphabetically. Everything started with a "00," meaning it was just an idea and not in the final book, which means that all those "00" chapters above were never used. As certain chapters began to show promise, I upgraded their number to where I thought they should appear in the book order. Similarly, inside each subdirectory, I prefixed all my files with a two-digit number, to make them easier to sort. Here's the "03.starbucks" subdirectory:
In this case, the "00" files were created in the first few months of research, the "01" files were round 1 of the prank, "02" round 2, and so forth.
